ORCKA Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Level 1 is a comprehensive introduction designed for those looking to build a strong foundation in the sport. This 7-hour course focuses on the essential safety, skills, and theory required to paddle confidently in a sheltered water environment.
Core SUP Skills: Master the fundamentals including launching and removing your board, mounting and dismounting (from docks or beaches), and maintaining balance in various paddling positions.
Maneuvering Techniques: Learn precise control through forward straight-line paddling, stopping, landing, and pivot turns.
Safety & Self-Rescue: Develop the ability to safely fall away from your board and remount from deep water (kneeling or prone) after a fall.
Equipment Knowledge: Gain a thorough understanding of SUP board and paddle design, proper care, and the government regulations regarding required safety gear.
Environmental Awareness: Learn to assess safe paddling conditions, handle outdoor precautions (like sun and wind), and apply "No Trace" principles to minimize your impact on the water.
SUP Level 1 is the perfect starting point for recreational paddlers who want to move beyond basic "trying it out" and develop genuine competence on the board. It provides the technical background and safety confidence needed for independent paddling in calm conditions and serves as the mandatory prerequisite for advancing to SUP Level 2 (Skill Development) or pursuing SUP Instructor certifications.
ORCKA Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Level 2 builds upon the techniques and skills mastered in Level 1. This 12-hour course is designed to further develop a participant's paddling safety and technical skills while providing more in-depth theory for the intermediate paddler.
Intermediate Maneuvering: Master complex skills including sideward displacement, circles, and both reverse and forward straight-line paddling.
Advanced Safety & Rescues: Learn Peer Rescues, where you assist a fallen paddler by righting their board and helping them remount from the water. You will also refine your Self-Rescue skills, aiming to remount and resume paddling within two minutes of a capsize.
Environmental & Windy Conditions: Gain practical experience in maneuvering a 300-metre triangular course in rippled or windy water. Learn essential precautions for windy weather, such as "quartering" into waves and adjusting your trim.
Technical Theory: Deepen your knowledge of SUP board and paddle design, paddling mechanics (including center of gravity and pivot points), and the history and heritage of the sport.
Equipment Management: Learn how to safely lift, carry (solo), and secure a paddleboard onto vehicle storage racks using proper techniques.
Navigation & Resources: Become familiar with provincial and national SUP resources and government regulations regarding mandatory safety gear, such as sound signaling devices and buoyant heaving lines.
SUP Level 2 is the standard for paddlers who want to move beyond sheltered waters and feel confident in more dynamic environments. It is a mandatory prerequisite for those wishing to pursue SUP Instructor 1 certification. This course ensures you have the technical finesse and safety knowledge to handle a board with mastery, whether for fitness, touring, or future leadership roles.
